Hip pain can take many forms: a pulling sensation in your groin when you stand up, a sharp pain on the outside of your hip when lying down, or a stiffness that shadows your first steps in the morning. Where your pain is located and when it strikes tells us a lot about its root cause. At BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten, we analyze this systematically, offering physiotherapy and osteopathy under one roof—from your initial assessment right through to training in our own, fully equipped functional gym right here in the clinic.
Where do you feel the pain? Let's target it.
Conquer outer hip pain
Pain on the outer hip, typically triggered when lying on the affected side or climbing stairs, usually originates from the tendon attachments and bursae on the greater trochanter. Discover more on this further down the page.
Lateral Hip Pain (Trochanteric Bursitis and Tendon Irritation)
The gluteal muscles attach to the lateral hip bone, known as the greater trochanter, with bursae situated in between. When the tendon attachments or bursae become inflamed and irritated, this is referred to as trochanteric bursitis or greater trochanteric pain syndrome. Typical symptoms include localized tenderness on the outside of the hip, pain when lying on your side, and discomfort after walking for extended periods. This irritation typically responds exceptionally well to targeted load management and strengthening exercises. In physical therapy, we combine hands-on manual techniques with a customized exercise program designed to rebuild your tendon strength and get you back to peak performance.
Glute Pain Radiating Down the Leg
Not every pain in your hip actually originates there. Deep pain in the glutes, which sometimes radiates down the leg, can stem from your gluteal muscles (such as the piriformis), but it could also come from your lower back or sciatic nerve. Pinpointing the exact source is key to finding the right treatment. That's exactly what your assessment is for: we'll test whether your pain is coming from your hip, your muscles, or your lumbar spine.

Conquering Hip and Pelvic Pain During Your Pregnancy
During pregnancy, hormones and growing weight shift your body's alignment: your pelvis and hips work differently, and your symphysis and pelvic girdle can ache—often when walking, climbing stairs, or turning in bed. While this is challenging, it can be highly treatable in many cases. We support you with gentle manual techniques and exercises tailored to your unique pregnancy journey.
After your hip transformation
Whether it is a hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty) or a joint-preserving procedure: After surgery, your rehabilitation plays a crucial role in how successfully you regain your mobility. At BodyLab, structured physiotherapy and medical training therapy (MTT) serve as key components among several training options to guide you through your recovery phases, working in close coordination with your physician.
This is how your BodyLab treatment works
It always starts with a diagnosis: we analyze your hip, your movement patterns, and your history in detail to create your personalized plan. Depending on the root cause, we work with manual therapy and targeted exercises in physiotherapy, with osteopathy—which addresses the interplay of the joint, pelvis, and surrounding structures and can be booked directly without a doctor's referral—or with progressive conditioning in our in-house training area. Our interdisciplinary team of physical therapists and osteopaths collaborates directly: short paths, one file, one plan.
When to consult your doctor
Hip pain is rarely dangerous. However, you should seek immediate medical evaluation if you experience any of these signs:
Hip pain following a fall where the leg cannot bear weight: a fracture must be ruled out first
Fever accompanied by sudden, severe hip pain: a potential sign of a joint infection
Hip pain in children and adolescents, especially when accompanied by a limp: growth-related conditions must be ruled out
These signs are rare. If none of them apply to you, nothing stands in the way of your treatment with us.
Who covers the cost? Let's talk investment in your future.
Physiotherapy is fully covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral, and by accident insurance or your health insurance's accident coverage after an injury.
You can book osteopathy directly without a referral; it is covered through your supplementary insurance for alternative and complementary medicine.
Whether you choose physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-paying client, with no compromise on treatment quality or time. To find out what your treatment will cost, visit Rates and Coverage.
For quick relief, avoiding pain-triggering positions, staying active with gentle, pain-free movement, and applying heat to soothe muscle tension are great first steps. But true progress starts with finding the root cause. A professional assessment will pinpoint whether your joints, tendons, or back are holding you back, unlocking the exact strategy you need to move forward with confidence.
