The Essentials

PREVENTION, SPORT, AND MOVEMENT – HOW DOES IT WORK?

Prevention, Sport, and Movement - BodyLab | Osteopathy and Physiotherapy

USE IT OR LOSE IT

We have all heard it before. We all actually know it. But why is that, exactly?

The human body functions very much like a machine – if you leave a car sitting for too long without using it, it slowly starts to break down. The human body is no different. It requires regular movement to keep the joints well-lubricated and prevent them from rusting, ensuring that the entire organism functions at its peak. Otherwise, a wide variety of physical ailments, dysfunctions, and illnesses can arise over time. These can affect the musculoskeletal system (causing joint, muscle, knee, head, or back pain, lumbago, osteoarthritis, etc.) as well as compromise the internal organs (resulting in constipation, stomach, and digestive issues, etc.). Ultimately, this leads to a steady, ongoing deconditioning of the body, bringing with it a decline in performance and quality of life.

In the event of an acute issue, osteopathy is an excellent solution, and you are in the best possible hands with us at BodyLab Osteopathy Zurich. Through mobilization and manipulation, the osteopath releases mechanical blockages and relieves your pain, paving the way for rehab and strength-rebuilding training with the physiotherapist.

Taking your specific symptoms into account, your physiotherapist at BodyLab Physiotherapy Zurich will design a customized exercise program tailored to your challenges and the current state of your condition.

The goal is to train and improve everyday movements—starting with simpler ones and progressing to more complex challenges—that demand and develop endurance, flexibility, strength, speed, coordination, and stability. We believe that coordinative skills, both intra- and inter-articular, play a vital role in this process.

However, to ideally prevent a visit to us due to pain and discomfort in the first place, you should exercise regularly. To live is to move, and humans are built for movement – not to be anchored to an office chair like a tree in the ground. Ultimately, it takes very little time to care for our bodies and keep them healthy. Just one hour of movement a day acts as a powerful preventive measure. Whether this is 60 continuous minutes or two 30-minute sessions doesn't make a big difference—except for specific cardiovascular and endurance training. The main thing is that you get moving (more).

Look out for more motivational tips and reasons to move, alongside sports and exercise topics, in our upcoming blog posts.
