Lumbago: When Your Back Suddenly Locks Up

Lumbago: When Your Back Suddenly Locks Up

A quick twist, reaching for your bag, and suddenly a sharp pain shoots through your lower back: lumbago, commonly known as a locked back. As intense as it feels, in the vast majority of cases, it's not a serious injury, but rather an acute muscle spasm or joint blockage. And here is the most important thing to know: you don't have to go through this alone, and you definitely don't have to wait weeks for relief.

What happens in your back

With acute lower back pain (lumbago), your back reacts with a protective tension: the muscles contract reflexively, often triggered by an unfamiliar movement, a locked facet joint, or simply a moment of overload. The pain is an alarm signal, not a sign of damage. That is exactly why the right amount of movement is usually much better than complete rest.

How we help you

In physiotherapy, we release the acute tension using manual techniques, mobilize the locked joints, and show you positions and movements that relieve pain instead of provoking it. The goal of your first session is noticeable relief, so you can get moving again. Osteopathy adds another valuable perspective: checking if your pelvis or adjacent spinal sections are restricted in their mobility and contributed to the overload. Together, we then determine if your back needs more support, such as targeted strength training, to ensure this remains a one-time event.

When to take charge and see a doctor

Back pain is rarely serious. However, you should seek immediate medical evaluation if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Paralysis or sudden weakness in your foot or leg

  • Numbness in the genital area

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

  • Fever in addition to back pain

  • Pain following a fall (for older adults, even a minor slip counts)

These symptoms are rare. If none of them apply to you, nothing is holding you back from starting your treatment with us.

Who covers the cost? Let's talk investment in your future.

Physiotherapy is fully covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral, and by accident insurance or your health insurance's accident coverage after an injury.

You can book osteopathy directly without a referral; it is covered through your supplementary insurance for alternative and complementary medicine.

Whether you choose physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-paying client, with no compromise on treatment quality or time. To find out what your treatment will cost, visit Rates and Coverage.
