Receiving a herniated disc diagnosis might sound daunting, but the reality is far more encouraging: many cases cause little to no discomfort, and the vast majority can be successfully treated conservatively—completely without surgery. All it takes is a clear, active plan designed to reclaim your comfort, mobility, and strength step by step.
What Happens to the Disc
Your intervertebral discs are the shock absorbers of your spine: a sturdy outer ring of fiber with a gelatinous core. If the ring bulges, it’s a protrusion; if it tears and core material escapes, it’s a prolapse—what we know as a herniated disc. When this tissue presses on a nerve root, pain radiates along the affected nerve: usually down the leg for a lumbar spine issue, or into the shoulder and arm for a cervical spine (neck) issue.
Our Path Back to Peak Performance
In physiotherapy, we start with relief: we soothe acute pain using manual techniques and guide you on the best positions for daily life. Osteopathic treatment complements this plan with a unique perspective, checking the mobility of adjacent spinal segments and the pelvis, while releasing any compensatory tension built up around the affected area. As soon as the pain allows, we introduce movement—because spinal discs thrive and nourish themselves through loading and unloading. Finally, we rebuild a resilient core and back: through active therapy and Medical Training Therapy (MTT) in our dedicated training area, guided and safely paced for your success.
And What If Surgery Is Required?
Certain situations require medical intervention, such as severe paralysis. We work in close partnership with physicians: if surgery becomes necessary, we will support you before and after the procedure through your rehabilitation, getting you safely back to your sport and daily life.
Cervical Disc Herniation (Neck)
Significantly less common than in the lumbar spine, but just as important to address: a herniated disc in the cervical spine (neck) typically signals itself through neck pain radiating into the shoulder, arm, or hand, often accompanied by tingling or numbness. If the herniation presses on a nerve root, you might also experience loss of strength in your arm or hand; this should always be medically evaluated.
In most cases, treatment is conservative—meaning no surgery is required. We focus on targeted relief, manual therapy, and a progressive exercise program designed to make your neck and shoulder girdle strong and resilient once again. Just like with a lumbar herniation, the body is fully capable of naturally breaking down herniated disc tissue over time, and most people experience a significant improvement in symptoms.
