Cervical Spine Syndrome: What's Really Behind Your Neck Pain

Cervical Spine Syndrome: What's Really Behind Your Neck Pain

Just back from the doctor and your prescription says cervical spine syndrome? This is not just a single clinical picture, but a collective term for symptoms originating from the cervical spine. That is exactly why the next step is so crucial: finding out what is specifically behind it for you. That is our mission at BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten.

Typical Symptoms of Cervical Spine Syndrome

  • Neck pain, sometimes radiating into the shoulder or arm

  • Tension and limited mobility

  • Headaches originating from the neck, known as cervicogenic headaches

  • Occasional tingling in the arms or hands

What the Diagnosis Means—And What It Doesn't

Cervical spine syndrome describes where your discomfort is coming from, but not why. The underlying cause can be muscular tension, joint dysfunction, wear and tear, or a combination of these. In the vast majority of cases, there is no dangerous underlying disease, and the symptoms are highly treatable.

If the pain radiates strongly into your arm, specialists refer to this as cervicobrachial syndrome. In this case, we also check whether a nerve root is involved, for example due to a herniated disc in the cervical spine. It is important to know: not every pain radiating into the arm means a herniated disc or nerve root issue. Tense muscles can also send pain all the way down into your arm—an effect known as referred pain. Rarely, a compression syndrome like Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, where nerves and blood vessels between the neck and shoulder are under pressure, is the culprit. Radiation alone does not reveal the cause; only a thorough assessment shows exactly where your treatment needs to start.
