Conquer Calcific Tendonitis in Zurich Altstetten

A calcific shoulder can remain quiet for a long time and then suddenly strike: intense, sometimes shooting shoulder pain, often with no apparent trigger. Behind this lies a calcium deposit in a tendon of the rotator cuff, known professionally as tendinosis calcarea. At BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten, we will help you power through the flare-up and keep your shoulder mobile and strong, working in close coordination with your doctor.

What Happens with a Calcific Shoulder

For reasons that are not yet fully understood, the body deposits calcium in a tendon, most commonly in the supraspinatus tendon at the top of the shoulder. Many of these deposits never cause any issues. However, pain and discomfort often arise precisely when the body starts breaking down the deposit again: during this resorption phase, the tendon can become severely inflamed—this is the infamous flare-up. Good to know: in many cases, a calcific shoulder is self-limiting, meaning the calcium often disappears on its own.

How We Treat a Calcific Shoulder

  • During an acute flare-up:  Pain and load management are our top priorities. We relieve the irritated tendon, keep the rest of the shoulder moving gently, and coordinate pain therapy with your doctor. During an acute flare-up, we can often schedule an appointment for you on short notice.

  • Outside of flare-ups: In physiotherapy, we focus on maintaining mobility and strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles to make the tendon more resilient. Manual therapy and dry needling can be added if myofascial trigger points—those tight, painful muscle spots—are contributing to your discomfort.

  • Osteopathy:  Relieves stress on the areas surrounding the irritated tendon, from the shoulder girdle to the thoracic spine, and is bookable directly without a referral.

  • Medical Options:  For persistent deposits, medical procedures such as shockwave therapy or targeted lavage (flushing out the deposit) are available. Your doctor will determine if this is the right path for you; we coordinate directly with them and take care of your post-treatment care.

When to consult your doctor

Shoulder pain is rarely dangerous. However, you should seek immediate medical evaluation if you experience any of these signs:

  • A fall or accident followed by a significant loss of strength or a visible deformity: this could indicate a torn tendon or a dislocated shoulder, both of which require immediate medical assessment.

  • Fever combined with a hot, swollen joint: a potential sign of a joint infection.

  • Numbness, tingling, or paralysis in your arm or hand: nerves could be involved.

  • Sudden, severe shoulder pain without any accident: this could be a calcium resorption flare-up, and your pain management should be professionally coordinated by a doctor.

These signs are rare. If none of them apply to you, nothing stands in the way of your treatment with us.

Who covers the cost? Let's talk investment in your future.

Physiotherapy is fully covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral, and by accident insurance or your health insurance's accident coverage after an injury.

You can book osteopathy directly without a referral; it is covered through your supplementary insurance for alternative and complementary medicine.

Whether you choose physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-paying client, with no compromise on treatment quality or time. To find out what your treatment will cost, visit Rates and Coverage.
