Whether you choose surgery or conservative treatment, your rehab after an ACL tear determines how safely and completely you'll return to your daily life and sports. At BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten, we guide you through a structured journey, combining physiotherapy and training therapy under one roof.

What is an ACL tear?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the ultimate stabilizer of your knee, acting as a high-tech sensor that constantly feeds joint position and movement data to your nervous system. When it tears—typically during a sudden twisting motion while your foot is planted, whether you're crushing it in sports or active in daily life—your knee loses both its rock-solid stability and this vital sensory control.
Surgery or rehab? We empower your journey either way
The right path depends on your specific injuries, activity level, age, and goals—it is a personal decision for you and your doctor. We are here to support your choice and guide you through rehab on either path. Often, you can start with a conservative approach and opt for surgery later if needed.
Your knee is supported not just by ligaments, but also by your muscles, which can step up and take on part of the workload when properly trained. Whichever path you choose, rehab is what determines your success. We don't perform surgery; we are your dedicated rehab partners, no matter what you decide.

Our ACL Rehab: Dominate Every Phase
What's in Focus
Early Stage
Reduce swelling and pain, regain full extension, activate your quadriceps, and walk with confidence on crutches.
Growth Phase
Step up your agility, strength, coordination, and balance, one move at a time.
Training Phase
Targeted strength building, therapeutically guided and safely dosed (often as MTT).
Return to Sport
Jumping, landing, changing direction, and sport-specific training—complete with testing before you make your ultimate comeback.
How long your rehabilitation takes is entirely unique to you. Your knee sets the pace, not the calendar. Returning to your sport often takes several months to about a year, but you've got this.
Back to peak performance: guided by progress, not the calendar
When your knee is truly ready for jumps, sudden stops, and rapid changes of direction is determined by rigorous testing, not just the calendar. We evaluate:
Strength in comparison to your healthy leg
Symmetry through comprehensive jump and landing tests
Movement control, such as your leg alignment upon landing
Your mental confidence in your knee's stability
Neuromuscular control is just as crucial as sheer strength, and we build it up systematically. You get the green light only when the tests prove you are ready, decided collaboratively with you and your physician. This is how we actively minimize the risk of a re-injury.
Even for associated injuries and recovery after other interventions
Physiotherapy and elite training therapy, united under one roof
Physiotherapy, manual therapy, and active training are seamlessly integrated here, with strength building often combined with medical training therapy (MTT) in our dedicated training area. When needed, we complement your progress with osteopathy, manual lymphatic drainage, or dry needling—all in one place.

When to consult your doctor
Knee pain is rarely dangerous. However, you should get a medical evaluation immediately if you experience any of these signs:
Your knee locks or can no longer be straightened: something may be trapped in the joint.
Tense, rapid swelling shortly after an accident: potential bleeding into the joint.
A fever accompanied by a hot, swollen knee: a possible sign of a joint infection.
You cannot bear weight on your leg after a fall: a fracture must be ruled out.
These signs are rare. If none of them apply to you, nothing is standing in the way of your treatment with us.
Coverage Guaranteed
Physiotherapy is covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral. In the event of an accident, your accident insurance or the accident coverage of your health insurance company will step in. For Medical Training Therapy (MTT), prior cost approval from your health insurance company is required, which we will clarify with you before we get started. You can book Osteopathy directly without a referral; most supplementary insurance policies for alternative and complementary medicine will contribute to the costs.
Whether it's physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-payer, with absolutely no compromise on the quality of your treatment or time. You can find the cost of your treatment under Rates and Cost Coverage.
