After knee surgery, rehab is what decides how mobile, strong, and resilient your knee will become again—whether you've had a knee replacement or an arthroscopic procedure. At BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten, we support you step-by-step after your knee surgery, from those first days on crutches all the way back to cycling, hiking, or sports.
Post-Op Rehab
Discover the surgeries and procedures this premium rehab program is designed to help you conquer
The most common journey is rehab following a total knee arthroplasty (TKA)—a complete artificial knee joint. We are also right by your side after arthroscopic procedures, such as meniscus or cartilage surgery, as well as partial replacements and osteotomies: faster recovery times, but with the same structured approach. If you are recovering from an ACL tear, you will find our specialized ACL rehab on its own page [Link: /angebot/kreuzbandriss]. And if you are experiencing knee pain without surgery, our knee pain overview is designed to help you move forward [Link: /beschwerden/knieschmerzen].
How to crush your recovery after knee surgery
By the way, if your surgery is scheduled but hasn't taken place yet, starting your training now is a game-changer. The strength and muscle control you build before the procedure are assets you won't have to rebuild from scratch afterward.
Ask your surgeon or primary care physician for a prescription for this preparation—known as prehabilitation—or reach out to us directly, and let's make the most of the time you have before your surgery.
Phase 1: Protect & Mobilize
Control the swelling, respect the natural healing process, and reclaim the most valuable asset of these first few weeks through manual and active therapy: extension and flexion, paired with your initial thigh activation exercises. This phase also includes gait training with crutches to prevent a compensatory limp from setting in. If swelling is pronounced, manual lymphatic drainage will support your recovery.
Phase 2: Strength and Function
Targeted strengthening of your quadriceps and glutes, enhancing balance and mastering everyday movements like climbing stairs and standing up. Medical Training Therapy (MTT) is perfect for this—equipment-based strength training under professional guidance. Best of all, you train right where you receive treatment: directly in the clinic.
Phase 3: Reclaiming Your Everyday Life and Athletic Peak
Whether it's walking longer distances, cycling, hiking, swimming, or, depending on your starting point and procedure, returning to your sport—we've got you covered. We make your progress measurable: range of motion, swelling reduction, and strength comparison with your other side. These metrics, combined with our clinical expertise, define your next steps toward peak performance.
How quickly you power through these phases depends on your specific surgery and your body's natural healing response: after a simple arthroscopy, you're looking at weeks, while a joint replacement takes months. But the path to success remains exactly the same.
What about Osteopathy?
After years of dealing with a painful knee, your hips, pelvis, feet, and back have likely adapted to compensate—and these patterns don't just vanish once you get your new implant. This is where osteopathy comes in to elevate your rehab: it targets and resolves the limitations those years of strain have left in your surrounding joints and muscles.
Aligned with your surgeon’s custom plan, in perfect sync with your medical team
Your knee rehab is designed to align with your surgeon's specific post-op protocol; simply bring it along with your referral and surgical report to your first session. If any questions arise during your recovery, we'll consult directly with your doctor. You can find a complete overview of our post-surgical rehabilitation and our in-clinic training facilities on the overview page.
Your first session: how we kickstart your journey
Bring what you've got: your doctor's prescription, and if available, your surgical report and post-treatment plan. We will review your documents, assess your baseline with measurable data, and translate your surgeon's protocol into a customized plan that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle. From hour one, you will know exactly where you stand, what you are capable of, what you should focus on, and how to conquer the next steps.
When to see your doctor
Post-operative complications are rare. However, seek immediate medical evaluation if you experience any of these signs:
Fever, combined with the operated area becoming hotter, redder, and more painful: a potential sign of infection.
One-sided swelling, tension, or tenderness in your calf or leg: a possible thrombosis, especially during periods of low activity.
A sudden, significant loss of strength or sensation compared to previous days: this requires a medical assessment before your next therapy session.
Pain that increases day by day despite resting: your surgeon needs to evaluate this.
Coverage Guaranteed
Physiotherapy is covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral. In the event of an accident, your accident insurance or the accident coverage of your health insurance company will step in. For Medical Training Therapy (MTT), prior cost approval from your health insurance company is required, which we will clarify with you before we get started. You can book Osteopathy directly without a referral; most supplementary insurance policies for alternative and complementary medicine will contribute to the costs.
Whether it's physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-payer, with absolutely no compromise on the quality of your treatment or time. You can find the cost of your treatment under Rates and Cost Coverage.
