After herniated disc surgery, the nerve is finally relieved, but the real work starts now: building strength, regaining mobility, and reclaiming confidence in your own back. At BodyLab in Zurich Altstetten, we are right by your side to guide you through these three essential steps after your surgery.
Post-Op Rehab: Your Comeback Starts Here
Discover the breakthrough procedures this rehab is designed for
The most common scenario we support is rehab following microdisurgical disc surgery—specifically, the removal of herniated disc tissue. We are also right by your side after decompression for spinal canal stenosis and after spinal fusion surgeries, guiding you with a specialized, long-term recovery plan. If you are pursuing a non-surgical path, you can find our expert conservative treatment programs on our dedicated herniated disc page.
Your Guide to a Powerful Recovery After Herniated Disc Surgery
By the way, if your surgery is still ahead of you, the time before is incredibly valuable. Whatever core and back strength you build now is progress you won't have to fight for later—and active pre-hab is the ultimate way to set yourself up for success.
Phase 1: Protection and Everyday Mastery
First, let's reclaim your daily routine: standing up with your back protected, sitting in stages, and, most importantly, walking—because walking is your best strength-building workout in those first few weeks. During your treatment, we will mobilize your back using manual and active therapy within a pain-free range, following your surgeon's specific protocol. If needed, we will also treat your scar, keeping pace with your body's natural healing.
Phase 2: Strength and Performance
Now, we're focusing on building targeted strength: in the stabilizing muscles near the spine, as well as in your core, hips, and legs. A major part of this journey takes place in active physical therapy; additionally, Medical Training Therapy (MTT)—a guided, equipment-based strength program—is the perfect fit, allowing you to train right where you receive treatment: directly in the clinic. Your home program keeps the momentum going between appointments.
Phase 3: Back to daily life and dominating your sport
In the end, your back will once again carry you through everything your day demands: lifting instead of avoiding, stamina for long days, and a rich variety of movement instead of a protective routine. If you exercise regularly, we will target your training specifically to get you back to your workouts or competitions. We measure your progress through strength, walking distance, and the tasks of your daily life. These metrics, combined with our clinical expertise, determine your next steps.
The most common worry after slipped disc surgery isn't yesterday's pain, but the fear of the next relapse. The ultimate answer to this is a resilient, well-trained back: a strong back protects, while constant resting only weakens. This is exactly the kind of back we will build with you, phase by phase.
And what about Osteopathy?
Months of sciatica or compensatory posture leave their mark on your entire body: your pelvis, hips, and thoracic spine have adapted. This is where osteopathy can perfectly complement your rehab: it examines and treats these surrounding areas, ensuring the operated section doesn't have to carry all the load again.
Following your surgeon's blueprint
Especially when it comes to the spine, your surgeon's post-operative protocol is vital; please bring it to your first appointment along with your prescription and surgical report. Should any questions arise during your progress, we will consult directly with your doctor. You can find an overview of our post-surgery rehabilitation and the in-practice training area on our main page.
Your first session: how we kickstart your journey
Bring what you've got: your doctor's prescription, and if available, your surgical report and post-treatment plan. We will review your documents, assess your baseline with measurable data, and translate your surgeon's protocol into a customized plan that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle. From hour one, you will know exactly where you stand, what you are capable of, what you should focus on, and how to conquer the next steps.
When to take charge of your health and see a doctor
Complications after surgery are rare. However, you should seek immediate medical evaluation if you experience any of these signs:
Fever accompanied by the operated area becoming hotter, redder, and more painful: a potential sign of infection.
One-sided swelling, tension, or tenderness in your calf or leg: a possible thrombosis, especially during periods of low activity.
A sudden, significant loss of strength or sensation compared to previous days: this needs to be medically evaluated before your next therapy session.
New paralysis in your legs, numbness in the genital or buttock area, or bladder and bowel dysfunction: go straight to the emergency room.
Pain that increases day by day despite resting: your surgeon should examine it.
These signs are rare. If none of them apply to you, nothing is standing in the way of your treatment with us.
Coverage Guaranteed
Physiotherapy is covered by your basic health insurance with a doctor's referral. In the event of an accident, your accident insurance or the accident coverage of your health insurance company will step in. For Medical Training Therapy (MTT), prior cost approval from your health insurance company is required, which we will clarify with you before we get started. You can book Osteopathy directly without a referral; most supplementary insurance policies for alternative and complementary medicine will contribute to the costs.
Whether it's physiotherapy or osteopathy: you are always welcome as a self-payer, with absolutely no compromise on the quality of your treatment or time. You can find the cost of your treatment under Rates and Cost Coverage.
