What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic, manual method of examination and treatment in medicine that regards the person and their body as a whole. In Switzerland, it is considered a form of alternative or complementary medicine. Due to its successes and its ability to address contemporary medical problems with increasing scientific support, osteopathy is gaining recognition and importance in both Europe and Switzerland.

The concept is based on the understanding that the body has self-regulating healing mechanisms, which can fall out of balance due to various circumstances. This imbalance can lead to diverse complaints and problems of different origins, where the pain is often not felt at the actual site of the problem but may reside in another tissue.

Osteopathy primarily deals with functional disorders and dysfunctions of the human organism.

In this practice, the causes are sought out and, when found, eliminated to eradicate symptoms and stimulate the body's inherent healing powers. The focus is not primarily on diseases but rather on the interaction of various structures that hinder the self-healing capabilities of the human organism. This imbalance disrupts the body's equilibrium and leads to functional disorders.

Osteopathy is divided into three main areas, which are interconnected and influence each other.

Firstly, there is the parietal system, which is concerned with the musculoskeletal system, including the skeleton with all its bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and ligaments. The inner organs, with all their ligamentous suspensory systems, and the body's tissues like nerves, blood and lymph vessels, fasciae, and septa, belong to the visceral system. The craniosacral system, or craniosacral osteopathy, includes the skull and sacrum with the central (brain and spinal cord including cerebrospinal fluid) and autonomic nervous system (parasympathetic centers and their connections).

All these tissues together form a functional unit.

The understanding of the interaction and behavior of all these individual structures, in both healthy states as well as in illness and dysfunction, plays a crucial role and is central to osteopathic treatment and examination.
