In a nutshell
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a specialized treatment technique where thin needles are inserted into muscle trigger points to alleviate pain and enhance mobility.
Treatment process
Thin needles are placed in specific anatomical structures by trained therapists to deactivate the trigger points. This technique can be very useful, especially to target deeper muscles.
Mechanism of action
Relieve muscle tension with targeted stimuli that boost blood circulation and dissolve painful contractions.
Difference from acupuncture
Focused on muscular trigger points instead of energy pathways, leveraging Western anatomical knowledge, and aiming for immediate physical reactions.
In-depth dry needling
Dry needling is a powerful, minimally invasive complement to manual trigger point therapy, which we practice at BodyLab Zurich. In this treatment method, a needle is precisely inserted into pre-identified trigger points within the muscles. This technique induces what's known as the "Twitch Response," which can often be more challenging to achieve through manual treatment. The goal remains the same as with classic trigger point therapy: to de-activate active trigger points causing discomfort, pain, restricting mobility, or impairing function.
Through our intensive training, we possess comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. Dry needling releases the contracted spot in the trigger band and activates the inflammatory response after treatment. As a result the muscle relaxes and your discomfort disappears. Our experienced therapists in Zurich apply this therapy purposefully for both athletes and patients with everyday complaints.

During dry needling, you might experience a brief, sharp pain as the fine needle penetrates the skin. Afterwards, you may feel a pull or muscle twitch as the trigger point is addressed. Our patients describe this sensation as manageable and temporary. We tailor the therapy to your pain tolerance and maintain open communication with you throughout the treatment in Zürich Altstetten. Following dry needling, mild muscle soreness might persist for a few days.
